Introduction Zineglob Argan Oil
Over many centuries Argan Oil has been known as an extremely unusual secret and a natural miracle by the Berber women in Morocco by using it for nourishing their skin, hair and nails and protecting them from the harsh conditions of the environment. More and above, Argan Oil is regarded as “miracle liquid gold of Morocco”. Argan oil is the unique cosmetic product of its type and standard owing to its multiple uses. No other cosmetic product of such multifarious usage has ever been produced.
Argan oil is fully regarded to be one of the most natural rarest, precious oils extracted in human history.
Based on its rarity and precious, Argan oil is highly appreciated by Moroccans and natural oil fans and enthusiasts not only in Morocco but also around world. How precious is Argan oil!
Actually, Argan oil is extremely precious because it has multiple health benefits. For understanding the essence of Argan oil to human life, first of all you have to know its history, uses and benefits.
Argan Oil History
Actually, the Argan tree (argania spinosa) is the oldest trees in world that still yields up to this moment and requires no cultivation. Argan tree grows exclusively in the semi-desert of southwest Morocco - roughly between Essaouira and Agadir, it is relatively not big, and only grows to about 10 meters in length. The Argan tree lives hundreds of years, 200+ years according to official estimates, and from it grow the Argan fruit. Argan tree yields Argan fruit and still yields it even at a very old age. The fruit has a green fleshy in the spring and olive sized fruits that are yellow when ripe. Inside the fruit there is a nut which has an extremely hard shell and contains one to three almond shaped kernels. The nuts are collected after they have fully dried and have fallen to the ground in the end of summer, and produced into the Argan oil by a very arduous traditional process.
Argan tree has a regenerative ability to ‘resurrect’ after death, and this is one of the important reasons why it is extremely special.
About 3 centuries ago, history dates the first time that the argan oil was mentioned in western history. Before the eighteen century, only the Moroccans knew how precious the argan tree is and what benefits it may bring to human life.
Argan tree has a thorny, rough and twisted stem. Its stem is short, but its branches can attain the height of 8-10 meters. Its oval shaped leaves have a small size. Its roots penetrate very deep into the soil for absorbing moisture necessary for its life because of hot dry climate of its environment.
In 1999 UNESCO declared the Moroccan Argan Forest as a World Biosphere.
Argan seeds contain 100% organic Argan oil. The special qualities of Argan Oil and the rapid decline of the Argan tree led to UNESCO designating an area of 25,000 sq km between the Atlantic and Atlas Mountains as a reserve.
The production of Argan oil, which is still relatively done by traditional methods, is a lengthy process.. The production of one liter of oil takes about 20-22 hours of hands on labor.
Once Argan oil has been produced, the oil will be used for different purposes.
Nowadays, the popularity of the Argan oil is spreading all over the world. There are many celebrities advertising and recommending the product everywhere. Argan oil is also used nowadays for the same reasons, health and beauty. People are now using the oil just like what the Berbers made of them. They apply Argan oil to their skin, hair and nails for protecting and nourishing these body parts. There are also multiple researches that have proven the effectiveness of Argan oil in protecting our skin and hair and providing us with optimum health.
Argan Oil Production
Argan oil is exclusively produced in Morocco. Argan oil production is a very difficult, manual, time-consuming, and labor-intensive process consisting of several steps. First step is harvesting and gathering Argan fruit. Second step is sun-drying Argan fruit for about 3-5 weeks. Third step is removing Argan fruit pulp for revealing Argan nuts. Forth step is crushing Argan nuts for obtaining Argan kernels. Fifth step is grinding kernels and extracting Argan oil manually or sometimes mechanically.
Harvesting Argan fruit
In fact harvesting Argan fruit is a very hard process and time-consuming and labor-intensive process that requires considerable physical efforts. This is due to location of many Argan trees is either on steep terrain or in deep valleys. So, accessing Argan forest by trucks or vehicles is not always possible. Actually, harvesting Argan fruit performed by locals who don't own trucks or even vehicles for using even in the accessible parts of the forest. Locals often walk for many miles in the Argan forest in searing heat while carrying heavy loads of Argan fruits. Some of locals are wealthy enough to own mules or donkeys are lucky to avoid the exhausting task of carrying the heavy and burdensome loads themselves.
The pulping process is a separation of the dry exterior pulp from the inside nut. The nut is completely solid and there are 1-3 in each casing. The nut is put between two stones used to open it with precision and dexterity.
Crushing Argan nuts
This is a very difficult and time-consuming part of the process. Machines designed to crack Argan nuts failed miserably or showed poor results at best. The reason is that Argan kernels are very fragile and they were partially damaged and sharp shell pieces were embedded in the flesh of the kernels.
Due to their rather unusual oval shape, small size, and very highly hardness, Argan nuts must be cracked manually.
No wonder this process is time-consuming: Argan nuts must be cracked open and shelled one by one by hand!
Berber women cracking Argan nuts open by crushing their hard shells with stones. The precious Argan kernels are recovered, 2-3 kernels from each Argan nut. Now extraction of the Argan oil can begin.
Traditional (manual) extraction of Argan oil
Using the traditional stone hand mill Berber women grind Argan kernels into a brown paste, this process requires several days of hand kneading to extract Argan oil. This hand pressing does not allow for extracting the maximum yield and simply is not as efficient as machines. This process is a considerable waste given the scarcity of Argan fruit and the hard work required to obtain the precious Argan kernels.
Semi-mechanical extraction of Argan oil (We use this process) cold pressed
Argan kernels are ground with electric machines made of stainless steel.
Semi-mechanical extraction never ever requires water addition, yields about 10% more than manual extraction, and the quality of the oil still the same and remains intact since no chemicals used.
We operate in a modern hygienic facility and with reliable systems that carefully monitor the machines while pressing to make sure their temperatures never exceed room temperature.
Leftovers from Argan kernels pressed by machine are fed to livestock or used in the production of cosmetic products.
Refining and decanting Argan oil
After pressing, Argan oil is refined to remove impurities.
There are different methods of refining Argan oil. In order to preserve the quality and naturalness of the oil however it is important to choose a refining method that does not involve the use of chemicals or steam (heat), such as: filters or centrifuges.
Argan oil is refined with FDA and Ecocert approved filters. They do not involve the use of any chemicals or interfere with the quality of Argan oil. It is a 100% mechanical process where Argan oil flows through 1 micron sized holes in the filter. Argan oil is refined while remaining 100% natural.
100% Natural Argan oil is the one which is free from any sediment.
Sediments shorten the life of the oil, because they favor bacteria breeding and oxidation.
Sediments are not proof that the oil has not been diluted. It could be mixed with poor quality oils while containing sediments. Sediments give Argan oil an odor that might be overbearing for personal use. Argan oil is 100% natural, for the above reasons, and completely free sediments.
Some interesting and amazing facts about Argan oil production.
